Movie enthusiasts who have been following the career of Natural Star Nani know him for his boy-next-door roles. However, his latest film Dasara showcases his talent in an out-and-out mass role. The film is directed by debutant Srikanth Odela and produced by Sudhakar Cherukuri.
Dasara is set in the village of Veerlapalle in Godhavarikhani, and the story revolves around Dharani (Nani), his friend Soori (Deekshith Shetty), and others who are addicted to alcohol. Vennela (Keerthy Suresh) is their common friend since childhood. Chinna Nambi (Shine Tom Chacko), son of Shivanna (Samuthirakani), is elected as the Sarpanch and looks after the Silk Bar. Rajanna (Sai Kumar) helps Soori and his friends in a case, and they elect him as their Sarpanch. Unfortunately, on the night of Soori's wedding with Vennela, someone kills Soori. The story then follows Dharani, who tries to uncover the truth behind the murder.
The film's major plus points are the outstanding performances of the lead actors. Nani, in particular, has given his best performance as Dharani. Keerthy Suresh delivers a flawless performance as Vennela, and Deekshith Shetty's natural acting skills will surely get him many good roles in the Telugu film industry. Shine Tom Chacko and other supporting actors also deliver impressive performances.
The action sequences and dialogues are top-notch, and the director's outstanding skills are evident on the big screen. The music by Santhosh Narayanan uplifts many scenes in the film, and Sathyan Sooryan's camerawork is impressive, especially during the night scenes. Production values are top-notch, and the makeup artists deserve praise for their amazing work.
On the downside, the screenplay in the second half is slow and predictable, which makes the film laggy in some portions. Also, the story lacks humor, and the popular track Chamkeela Angeelesi is poorly placed. The editor could have trimmed many scenes in the second half to make the film more engaging.
Overall, Dasara is a gritty action drama that is perfect for weekend entertainment. Although the screenplay could have been better in the second half, Nani's outstanding performance and the technical aspects of the film make it worth watching.
