Chennai Super Kings suffered a defeat in their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against the Gujarat Titans in a game that was marked by the Titans' impressive display of batting. Despite the Titans losing five wickets, they still managed to score a total of 179 runs, a target that proved to be too much for the Super Kings.

The Titans' opening pair, Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum, gave their team a strong start, scoring a total of 69 runs in just 6.5 overs. Smith was the first to go, scoring 39 off 29 balls, while McCullum went on to score 49 off 29 balls before being dismissed by Super Kings' bowler, Dwayne Bravo.

The Super Kings' bowlers tried to make a comeback, with Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja picking up two wickets each. But the Titans' middle order managed to hold their own and push the score to a challenging total.

In response, the Super Kings started off well, with opener Ruturaj Gaikwad scoring 22 runs off 13 balls. However, the Titans' bowlers soon took control of the game, with pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile picking up three wickets, including that of Gaikwad. The Super Kings lost five wickets for just 55 runs in 9 overs.

The Titans' spinners, Piyush Chawla and Rashid Khan, then took over, stifling the Super Kings' middle and lower order. Despite a valiant effort from Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 26 runs off 16 balls, the Super Kings fell short of the target by 26 runs.

The Titans' victory was all the more impressive given that they were missing five key players, including captain Kane Williamson and star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who are currently on international duty.

The Super Kings, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly if they hope to make a comeback in the tournament. They will be looking to bounce back in their next match against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
